Goldendoodle Common Health Problems (And Warning Signs)
Goldendoodles are generally healthy thanks to hybrid vigor, but as a Golden Retriever × Poodle mix they can inherit health issues from both parents. Knowing the early warning signs can save you money and save your dog from suffering. Here are the most common ones.
This guide is part of our complete Goldendoodle care guide.
1. Ear Infections
Those adorable floppy, hairy ears trap moisture — the perfect environment for infection. Signs: head shaking, scratching, odor, or redness. Prevention: keep ears dry, clean weekly, and pluck excess hair (covered in our grooming guide).
2. Hip Dysplasia
Common in larger doodles. Watch for stiffness, trouble rising, or a “bunny-hop” gait. Keeping your dog lean and joint supplements help. Buy from breeders who health-test the parents.
3. Allergies & Skin Issues
Itching, paw licking, and recurring ear issues often trace back to food or environmental allergies. Diet is the first lever to pull — see our best food for Goldendoodles guide.
4. Eye Conditions
Poodle genetics can carry progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and cataracts. Annual vet eye checks catch these early.
5. Bloat (in Standards)
Larger doodles can be at risk of bloat — a life-threatening emergency. Feed smaller meals, avoid heavy exercise right after eating, and learn the signs (swollen belly, retching without vomiting).
